remnants and schemes, an exhibition of self-generating devices and objects by artist Bill Schuck, is the artist’s first solo exhibit at GAC and will run from August 16 - September 14, 2025. A public reception with the artist will take place on Saturday, August 16, 5 - 7 PM.

“The marks on my work are made without the direct touch of my hand,” said artist Bill Schuck. “Using a custom-built system of industrial pumps, timers, and switches, I release ink, bleach, or vinegar one drop at a time. These drops, whether additive or subtractive, create self-organizing radial patterns as they scatter across the surface, slowly revealing its topography. Over time, the liquid disperses, leaving only a trace. As the process unfolds, my original vision recedes, giving way to the independent identity of the piece. I am both the steward and the author, guiding a system that ultimately moves beyond my control.”

Some pieces are still in motion, quietly forming as the system drips on; others are complete, shaped by a process now at rest. Mounted on walls or suspended in space, the works offer a glimpse into transformation—each one a record of time, change, and the quiet surrender of control.

remnants and schemes will be on view in the Gillette Gallery, concurrent with Axons, an exhibition by Marieken Cochius in the Balter Gallery.
