In his work, Dennis explores Indigenous identity, specifically the burden of the loss of culture through assimilation, omission of Indigenous history in school curriculum, and loss of land and economic disadvantage. Dennis’s first solo exhibition at GAC, showcases work from his project, ‘Rise’, which reflects on his experiences and observations as a Shinnecock Indian Nation tribal member in Southampton, New York. ‘Rise’ examines the ongoing subtle fear of Indigenous people in the United States. Fear, in this instance, may come from acknowledging the presence, not of an extinct people, but of sovereign nations who have witnessed and endured the process of colonization for hundreds of years and remain oppressed

“It is not only an honor to be showcased and shared with the wider community, but it is also an opportunity to share Indigenous stories and present-day experiences as a form of education,” says Dennis.

Artist Talk: Thursday, June 12, 6 - 7 pm

In this online discussion about “Reclaiming Narrative,” Dennis will share his artistic journey, inspirations, and the concepts behind each series. The talk will be open to the public and encourage dialogue between the artist and the audience. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the motivations and intentions behind the artworks, fostering a greater appreciation for Indigenous art and culture.
