INSCAPE/OUTSCAPE: Works on Paper displays selected works generously lent by The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation. Grounded in verticality, contrast, and structural detail, this nearly monochromatic collection explores architectural forms and the interplay of shadow and light. By examining the boundaries between interior and exterior, presence and absence, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how both literal and metaphorical environments shape our perception and way of seeing the world.

Catherine V. Graham, Executive Director of Garrison Art Center, said, “The Foundation holds a collection of unusual depth and feeling. William Louis-Dreyfus collected outside the direction of the market, guided by relationships with artists, studio visits, and his own eye, rather than prevailing taste. That sensibility is evident throughout: the work carries an intimacy and conviction not always found in collections built through dealers and advisors. The holdings also include a notable concentration of figurative and representational work from a period when such work had fallen out of favor with mainstream collectors. Considered together, these qualities make it an exceptional collection of humanitarian nature.”

In both life and in art, he was always looking; he loved the sense of poetry in a subject barely glimpsed and the surprise of an unexpected view from a door or window frame, looking either in or out," shared Foundation Curator Christina Kee.

Artworks were selected from The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation by Charles Burleigh (Board Member and Gallery Committee Member), Melissa Small Cooper (Board Secretary and Gallery Committee Member), Monica Church (Gallery Committee Member), Catherine V. Graham (Executive Director), and Stanford Kay (Gallery Committee Member).

The committee built the exhibition around works on paper as a unifying medium. With two exceptions — one piece on panel and one on cardboard, a paper-based material consistent with that focus — every work on view is on paper.
