SUSAN STOVER | Piecework

September 12 - October 4, 2026

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 12, 2026, 5 - 7 PM

Piecework explores pattern, structure, and form through stitched constructions bridging painting, textiles, and sculpture. Grounded in the logic of the grid, these works compose individual elements of painted wood joined by heavy thread to investigate how parts contribute to a larger network.

“The grid serves as both a formal structure and a carrier of cultural meaning, with roots in textile traditions, organizing space while carrying cultural meaning through pattern and ornament,” said Stover. “In Piecework, stitching becomes both a physical and conceptual tool, exploring connection, repair, and the tension between fragility and stability, control and chaos. Some works embrace the grid’s order, while others push against it, becoming fragmented and irregular. Together, they consider how systems of structure, meaning, and control are continually disrupted and remade.”

Collectively, the works invite close looking, revealing how simple systems can generate rich and unexpected formal relationships. The works are built through the accumulation of connected parts, where the whole emerges from the joining of fragments.
