JING (ELLEN) XU | I Do Have Choices

September 12 - October 4, 2026

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 12, 2026, 5 - 7 PM

Artist Talk: Sunday, October 4, 2026, 3 PM

Centered on Xu’s ongoing modular clay-and-canvas series of 120 small works, the exhibition brings together color-based clay paintings, earlier clay works including Turn Right, newly developed red-and-black pieces, and recent drawings. Across these works, Xu uses repeated circles, handmade clay rings, dense mark-making, and shifting color sequences to explore how small decisions accumulate into larger systems of form, memory, and attention.

The title I Do Have Choices points to both limitation and possibility. In the central 120-part series, five colors are arranged in every possible sequence, transforming a simple set of conditions into a field of variation. Nearby clay works and drawings extend this logic through touch, line, and repetition. Some works feel cellular or bodily; others suggest maps, cosmic structures, or fragile architectures. Together, the exhibition presents choice not as a single dramatic act, but as a quiet, repeated process of making, adjusting, and continuing.

“I am interested in how a very small action can become a structure,” said Xu. “In these works, I repeat simple gestures: forming a clay ring, drawing a circle, choosing one color before another. Each decision is small, but the accumulation creates pressure, rhythm, and movement. The title I Do Have Choices comes from that tension between limitation and possibility. I want the work to hold both vulnerability and persistence.”
