Opening Reception: Saturday, February 8, 2025, 3 - 5 pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, March 1, 2025, 2 - 3 pm
'Depth Perception' spotlights a selection of Slick's recent acrylic paintings on wood panels and works on paper that explore ideas and forms of prehistoric monumentality using abstract language and figuration. The presentation is intended to engage visitors with unusual combinations of color that serve to organize the space within the paintings, and compositions that feature complex stacks of forms, or strata, in both the paintings and drawings.
Stratification as a visual element is key to the exhibition’s narrative. The stratified forms reference both geological and human-made objects existing together in space and, in an art/archaeological sense, time. Time’s arrow within these works is not horizontal but vertical, not pointing away from us but from the buried past up to where we stand in the present. The exhibition’s ultimate goal is to inspire curiosity, even wonder, and remind visitors that we are always connected to history as it exists beneath our feet, waiting to be uncovered and remembered.
