CRISTINA DE GENNARO |

The Quiet Sublime

April 11 - May 3, 2026

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 11, 2026 5 - 7 PM

Cristina De Gennaro considers how, as an aging woman, she can enter into dialogue with the traditionally masculine genre of landscape and its long-held ideals of nature, beauty, and the sublime. Walking the trails of New Mexico and New York’s Catskill Mountains, she approaches landscape as a way to connect with the lived experience of being female in an aging body. Rather than seeking grand vistas, De Gennaro turns her attention downward to weeds, soil, and plant life, finding meaning and beauty in the humble spaces underfoot. These intimate scenes evoke regeneration and decay, offering a grounded, fragile, and quietly powerful sublime. Plants in various stages of growth and decline mirror De Gennaro’s own aging body, marked by movement, pattern, grace, and
vulnerability. Using her iPhone, De Gennaro creates panoramic photographs of the ground, later transforming them into life-size charcoal drawings that explore the tension between order and chaos.

Through intuitive and critical observation, Cristina De Gennaro seeks a contemporary, feminine sublime rooted in time, change, and lived experience. What is often overlooked or deemed unsightly is rendered with care and attention. Drawing landscapes that, like aging itself, are layered with contradiction, holding both resilience and fragility, beauty and loss.

Cristina De Gennaro is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans drawing, painting, video, and photography. She has
presented solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at the Hunterdon Art Museum, GlogauAIR in Berlin, ARC Gallery in Chicago, and the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont. De Gennaro is the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, including awards from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, and artist residencies in Rome, Spain, Germany, and across the United States. She holds an MFA from Stanford University.
