Sky Pape

Beauty, Marks, and Blemishes

December 9, 2023 - January 7, 2024

Opening Reception: Saturday, December 9, 5 - 7 pm

ink on paper, 15.5 x 15.5 x 1.5 in

Working on the floor of her studio, Sky Pape creates primarily on paper, making abstractions with ink, water-based paints, and drawing materials.  Her background in art and science guides her as she gleans resources across disciplines, cultures, and eras.  Like a curious child who won’t stop asking, ‘Why?’ she can’t resist poking at the question, ‘How do we make sense of all this?’

Pape perceives patterns, enabling her to navigate space and recognize what populates her world.  Patterns define infrastructure and interconnection and open a window into the fundamental principles of matter.  Here’s where geometry and patterns come into play in anticipating the future.  They help her understand something of the systems that operate within us and those within which we exist.

Sky Pape’s mind makes unexpected leaps when confronted by something a bit off, and she thrives on the alchemy of familiarity and wonderment that happens when she simultaneously experiences things known and unknown.  Reliably, the most illuminating surprises for Pape come from lingering with uncertainty and reaching beyond the margins of her understanding."
