GUIDELINES AND APPLICATIONS
S.O.S., a project of the New York Foundation for the Arts, working in collaboration with arts councils and cultural organizations across New York State, is designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career development. Visual, literary, media and performing artists may request support ranging from $100 to $600 for specific, forthcoming opportunities that are distinct from work in progress.
GAC administers S.O.S. grants for the mid-Hudson region, including artists living in these counties: Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester.
Strategic Opportunity Stipends (S.O.S.) is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts as well as contributions from private foundations and friends of NYFA. For more information about NYFA's programs and services, contact:

What does S.O.S. support?
S.O.S. SUPPORTS
  • Exceptional chance for advanced study with a significant mentor (not reLated to any degree program)
  • Travel associated with an imminent, concrete opportunity such as an audition, artist's own exhibition, workshop (note: state and federal standard for gas mileage is 32 cents per mile)
  • Professional fees and sservices for a specific opportunity such as lighting, graphic design or carpentry
  • Expenses related to child or daycare that would allow an artist to take advantage of a specific opportunity
  • Rental of equipment, instruments or materials to complete work scheduled for a gallery exhibition, performance, publication, etc., that will have a significant impact on the artist's career.
S.O.S. WILL NOT SUPPORT
  • Activities related to ongoing work
  • Applicant's own artistic fees
  • Entry, exhibition, registration or tuition fees, including those for workshops
  • Expenses involved in establishing, maintaining or administration of an organization or company
  • Costs involved in real estate: purchase, construction or improvements
  • Activities connected with an applicant's employer
  • Finishing funds that are not related to a Strategic opportunity
  • Strictly commercial activities or costs related to marketing
  • Medical, legal, or accounting fees
  • Self-produced publications
  • Arts-in-Education programs
  • Purchase of equipment
  • Routine documentation of work without a specific opportunity
Who can apply?
To apply you must be:
  • 18 years of age or older
  • A full-time resident for the past year from date of application deadline in one of the participating counties listed above
  • All recipients must show proof of residency status before receiving award money
  • If you are a past recipient of S.O.S. grant you may apply again without a waiting period

ROUND 2  For opportunities in March - June 2008

ROUND 3  For opportunities in July - Oct. 2008
Applications due: Wednesday, May 28, 2008, 5:00 P.M.
