ARTIST STATEMENT
Virginia Lavado born in Caracas, Venezuela where she started her career as an artist. She began show her drawings, prints and paints in 1976, since then she has exhibited nationally and internationally. In 1982 she moved to New York City and obtain a bachelor in fine arts from Pratt Institute. She has been publishing books for children and doing freelance for the Brooklyn Children Museum and the Manhattan Children Museum. Some of the art shows she had participated are: “XI Bienal de San Juan del Grabado Latinoamericano y del Caribe”, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, San Juan, Puerto Rico, “Latin American Book Arts” a traveling exhibition in major cities in USA and Canada and the “Paper Visions V: A Bienal Exhibition of Works on paper by Contemporary Latin American Artists”, Housatonic Museum among others.

The dark sense of humour reflected in her work combine with a life-long interest in folk tales and story telling has led her to develop an extensive work base on this subject. A simple rhyme becomes in her hands sinister theatre indeed. She is now based in Poughkeepsie, NY.

For the last few years I have been concerned in my work with the investigation of the worlds of dreams, mythology, fairy tales, rhymes, and their direct relationship to our human experience. I feel that those realms deeply affect our perception of reality, our interactions with the natural environment, and our own humanity. I am fascinated by this connection between fantasy and reality, which is at the source of my art. My drawings attempt to both represent and evoke these interconnections.
