| Working mainly in the field of portraiture, I have been a photographer for thirty-eight years. My endeavors have been journalistic, commercial and artistic and my subjects include both known and unknown people. Of the many portraits of notable people that I have taken, those of Samuel Beckett, David Hockney, Allen Ginsberg, and James Baldwin have been published frequently worldwide. The uncelebrated people that I photograph are those I meet at anytime who strike me with their exceptional beauty or gesture.
The magazines that I have worked for include Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview The New York Times and The Times of London, for which my subjects were primarily well known people in politics, sports and the arts. Up to 1986 when I moved to New York, I was a contract photographer for ten years with The Daily Telegraph Magazine and the BBC publicaton: Radio Times. Early in my career I shot stills for films, notably for Stanley Kubrick on Clockwork Orange, 2001 and Dr. Strangelove. In the field of corporate photography, I have traveled throughout Europe, Africa and the United States, on assignments for Fortune 500 companies photographing executives, employees, and landscapes. My advertising work has included campaigns for such clients as AT&T, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, IBM and Metropolitan Life. My work has been exhibited both here and in Europe. In addition to winning the Nikon/PDN award and a National Magazine Award, I have received three Gold Awards from the Connecticut Art Director's Club. Currently I am teaching an independent photography course at Vassar. I was also hired by them last year to redesign and supervise their darkroom. I have lectured at The Royal College of Art and have trained several assistants in my studio here and in Loondon. My personal photographic work at the moment consists of a report on the crumbling and overlooked city of Newburgh, NY, and portraits of writers and artists that I began 20 years ago. (And last but not least, a series of 13 portraits for the Garrison Village Association.) |
