"Aerial Tendrils" represents the evolution of the forms and concepts, which have been the focus of Kaete Brittin Shaw's work since the early 90's. In this site specific installation for CURRENT Shaw explores the pure sculptural qualities of the tendrils by varying the scale of the discs, stringing them together, and twining them around the branches of a pair of venerable willows, which border the Hudson River. The coloration of the inlaid porcelain discs is inspired by the subtle beauty of nature in this region. Their forms and surfaces are abstracted from a range of natural shapes including shells, tree fungi, bones and rocks. "My intention is for this piece to capture the essence of a growing tendril stretching skyward towards the light while remaining anchored to the trees which are deeply rooted in the earth."
