In his work Chanthour Oeur shows his belief in Mother Nature and the profound balancing of life. He uses light against dark, smooth against rough to represent the cosmic truths, the Happy and the Sad, and to show the peaceful beauty of combining the East with the West. Oeur was born on a small sandy island about 20 miles from Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Orphaned at an early age, he was fostered into many homes and locations, including Buddhist temples. Eventually he fled his country and now works through his art and other means to show the world the brilliant and rich culture hidden within Cambodia's long history. In his sculptural work Oeur uses various media including granite, marble, limestone, wood, and plaster. He has been an artist since before he can remember. "I do not know whether art is a part of my life or my life is a part of my art."
