Biography
"As a printmaker I have long loved the physical energy it takes to cut a block and the smell and feel of the wood or linoleum. I like the decision making process that working in black and white requires and the challenge of designing a surface using only the patterning of shapes and lines.

A lifelong interest, printing from blocks has been my primary focus for the last two years. The teacher in me likes to explore a subject thoroughly, hence my work tends to become a series. My last completed series is called Creatures. The images are based on some of the interesting wildlife I encountered in my journeys between New York and Florida. I found it amazing that often large birds and reptiles will wander freely around my yard or walk with me along the beach. As a printmaker the textures and feather patterns were striking.

My images are printed in black and white with highlights hand-tinted in watercolor. During the Creatures series I experimented with small amounts of color and have continued to add it because I find it pleasing, although the prints are composed in black and white. Most are editions of eight on hand-made mulberry paper and printed here at the Garrison Art Center.

After the completion of Creatures I found myself seeing imaginary creatures formed by the negative shapes of trees (and sometimes the trees themselves), as if the trees were drawing them for me to see. Sometimes they form patterns. My Trees of Life series has resulted and Carpintree is an example of the existing shapes as I saw them in a tree during a visit to Williamsburg, VA. I also try to approach life with a sense of humor and sometimes I find what I see amusing, thus the puns in the titles. It is always an adventure to find the right tree or meet an absolutely fascinating creature."

Known locally as an art educator in the Lakeland School District, Linda spent many years teaching art, until leaving to devote more time to her prints. She lives in Buchanan, New York, is married to John and the mother of two daughters, Alexandria and Amanda.
