When I paint from life, whether from a model, live animals or from photographs, my paintings always reflect my innermost feelings about the subject. My experience with animals especially with dogs has been truly gratifying. One of my most treasured experiences, a nose-to-nose encounter with a llama staring at me with its long black eyelashes and deep eyes moved me greatly. Each animal has its own unique personality. I mostly paint in oil. I love the bright colors of that medium. First, I draw my subject in graphite using darks and lights. When I am satisfied, I proceed to paint. I choose to paint on primed white canvas to achieve the effect of transparency. I have been studying anatomy, drawing and painting from live models with Sherry Camhy at the Art Students League in New York City. I have exhibited at the gallery of the Art Students League, at Orange Hall of Orange County Community College in Middletown, N.Y. and at the Bank of New York in Middletown where I live with my husband and my dog chouchou. Here are some comments from my customers: "I commissioned Hélène Kaplan to paint a portrait of my German Shepherd Vee. Hélène captured the very essence of her. It fills me with joy every time I look at the painting. It is a focal point in my living room." Brigitte Apostolakos. "Hélène Kaplan made a great painting of my baby, I could not imagine such a success." Linda Jackson. For more information call: Hélène Kaplan Tel. (845) 692-5370 |
