Clyde Deloris Herring began experimenting with collage in 1995, influenced by the work of Romare Bearden and inspired by the teachings of the Baha'i Faith. Ms. Herring is a vocalist and a maker of quilts as well. Born in Wilson, North Carolina in 1946, Ms. Herring moved in 1964 to New York City where she was exposed to new horizons of spirituality and art. She followed a path which led her to a study of Christianity, Islam and eventually the Baha'i Faith. The medium of collage attracted her because it combines a variety of textures and images into a single work -- an expression of the principle of unity in diversity, which her Faith promotes. She is currently employed by the Baha'i International Community, a non-governmental organization of the United Nations in New York. She has been a resident of Mount Vernon since 1986 and is active in community affairs. Ms. Herring is a member of the Mayor's Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Department of Planning and Community Development for the City of Mount Vernon. She is the recording secretary of the Mount Vernon Women's Service League, a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the Steering Committee for the African American Parent Involvement Day for the City of Mount Vernon. Friends she met on a visit to Zimbabwe bestowed the name Nomsa, which means "Mother of Kindness," upon her with affection. |
