Blue Mountain Forest Preserve  MONOPRINTS

These monoprints were made at Garrison Art Center print studio in the past 15 months. They are one-of-a-kind prints, made by running an inked plexiglass plate through an etching press. Ink is applied to the plate with a roller or by hand; ink is removed with a rag to create whites. I work from memory, continually erasing and beginning sections anew. The infinite flexibility of working on plexiglass is one of the medium's biggest advantages -- there is no fighting with the surface of the paper or canvas to erase or modify as often happens with drawing or painting. The image is transferred to paper only when I am satisfied with it.

My other focus is painting and monotype provides a valuable counterpoint to it. Whereas painting tends to be additive, monotype relies at least as much on subtraction, i.e., removing ink so that the paper makes light. My paintings have color and my monotype feels more like a focusing, where mood is intensified without the bouncing forces of color. Seeing the quiet force of black and white has given me a humble appreciation for the orchestral complexities of color use. Oil painting seems like a symphony, monotype solo piano.
