ARTIST STATEMENT |
| In her work, Deborah Beck hopes to share a spiritual/sensual voyage, exploring "reality's" many faces and dimensions. Through light, color and composition, the artist seeks to capture with immediacy particular moments, moods or feelings. She has found inspiration in her many trips to Europe and the Orient, and in the beauty of nature. "My paintings and monotypes express my fascination with the mysteries, rhythms, and energies of the natural world around and within us," states Deborah Beck. Gifted in her ability to express a wide range of poetic images and feelings from deep and mysterious, to serene, to light and whimsical, to bold, lush, vibrant, and pulsating, she works in oil, gouache, or watercolor to suit the desired mood. In this way she strives to convey the beauty, fragility and passion of our special human place within the larger, everchanging, evolving cosmos. Deborah earned a BA with Honors in Fine Arts from Brandeis University, receiving a special departmental first prize award in painting. She went on to complete her MA in Art Education from New York University, then continued her art studies at the Art Students League, Parsons School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts, as well as at numerous workshops. Believing in the transformative power of art in people's lives, Beck taught art and drug prevention education in the public schools for many years, and presently teaches part time in order to devote more time to her own work. She maintains membership at such prestigious art organizations as National Association of Women Artists, Women in the Arts Foundation, and New York Artists Equity Association. The artist has exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows in museums and galleries on the East Coast, including at the Horticultural Society of New York and at Nature's Image Gallery in Nyack, NY. An inveterate world traveler, camera always in hand, Deborah has been inspired by her numerous global voyages. These rich experiences, combined with a love of nature, give Deborah Beck constant renewal, taking her art to new heights. |
